I once walked into a company that had 26 retail stores. We couldn’t figure out what was happening with each individual store. We couldn’t figure out how to improve the company overall. So the first thing I did is I broke us into three different categories: stores that were performing well, stores that were performing adequately, and stores that were underperforming.
We were then able to take a microscope and put it onto the stores that were underperforming and figure out why they were underperforming. Doing so allowed us to make determinations of how do we improve them, or are they loss leaders and we just need to get rid of them? That’s how you create value within a business.
It’s understanding that complex information, breaking it down into digestible parts, and, and being able to make decisions based upon that newly digestible information.
