Creativity is the cornerstone to being a good CFO in a seasonal business. I was once the CFO of a Christmas ornaments company. We were doing approximately seventy-five percent of our sales during a three-month period. It was creating a lot of pressure on our distribution center, and we had a ton of seasonal payroll.

I came in and came up with a solution by working with a lender to create a lending policy that allowed us to sell throughout the year. The lender was happy ’cause it increased the interest that they were able to charge us. But at the same time, we were able to decrease our seasonal payroll by approximately seven hundred thousand dollars and relieve the stress on our distribution center for the remainder of the year.
